Our 1st Birthday Party!
Saturday was Peyton and Olivia's 1st birthday and Party! We had a lot of fun and the babies were great. It is hard to believe that a year has passed since they were born and I was a little emotional on Saturday morning when I woke them up to say Happy Birthday! We were blessed with the most perfect babies and everyday is so much fun for us to watch them as they are learning new things!
They are so so different from one another yet so much alike in some ways! We will go to the doctor for their 1year visit on the 27th so I will be able to give their weights then but for now:
Olivia has 4 teeth - she is cruizing around on everything - she will walk behind a push toy - she will stand alone for a couple of seconds - she can climb up on our bed (we have a platform bed) - she is able to use things as a ramp if they are close to the couch and climb up on it - she has been nipped by my sweet little puppy, Oliver, two times (because she was trying to take his toys) - she can say mama, ba ba, dada, night night, kitty and a few other things - she will eat anything - she likes TV - she loves to dance when you sing "clap, clap, clap your hands" - she loves to pull things out of the toy box - and she loves to climb over things - and she hates the grass.
Peyton has 6 teeth - he is cruizing around on everything - he likes to try to climb up on the bed and couch - he loves to laugh and wait for everyone else to laugh - he has enough hair for a lot of bows - he loves to pat pat pat on everything including heads, legs, tables, and drums - he can saw a few things but he mostly just makes loud noises and yells - He will eat anything - he does not care about the TV- he loves to pull things out of the toy box - and he hates the grass!
Here are a few pictures from the birthday party!

I will add more pictures later!@

Almost 1 year old
It has been forever since I have had a chance to update this blog but I wanted to do a quick update before their birthday and then I will add pictures and video from their party!
It is so hard to believe that in 3 days the twins will be 1 year old. So much has happened in the past year and I would not change it for the world. Peyton and Olivia arrived 2 months early and had some scary moments in the NICU but looking back we are so blessed to have such wonderful babies! The NICU nurses were awesome and they taught us so much about being parents and how to care for preemies.
This past weekend Olivia started pulling up on a walking toy and actually walking behind it! Peyton can walk on his knees behind the walking toy. Both babies have 4 teeth (2 on top and 2 on the bottom) Peyton is my little vampire - is is about to get his fangs!
They laugh and talk to each other and Olivia says Mama, Dada, Kitty, Ba Ba, and a few other things. Peyton does not say as much but he is starting to talk more. He said Kitty, Dada, and Mama recently but he really likes to laugh and get everyone to laugh with him. He will look around the room to make sure everyone saw him and then laugh again. Both babies can now go up stairs all the way to the top- Thanks to Mrs. Tonya (the babysitter) since we dont have stairs for them to climb.
We started weaning them off formula (which will be awesome when we can just buy milk and save us a fortune), and they love to eat everything that we eat. Our dinner continues to be a quick event because when we eat the babies are usually crawling all over us to get some of what we are eating. They will eat anything and everything!
We are blessed to have such wonderful babies who love to laugh and play with each other.
The big day is Saturday so cross your fingers that they will be great for the party! But it is their party and they can cry if they want to!!!!!!!!!!!

I give up
Today I officially want to give up on sleep training!!!!!!!
I have been trying to sleep train (get the babies to go to sleep on their own when I lay them in their cribs awake) for about 2 weeks now. Peyton has been successful and I just lay him down give him his paci and he goes to sleep. Olivia is another cup of tea. She is able to stand in her crib so immediately after I lay her down she rolls over and stands up. She will just stand and look around for awhile or sit down and play with her blanket... but then she falls down hits her head on the crib or just decides that she is not sleeping so she screams. Peyton sleeps through it but I can tell that he is not getting the best sleep because he is whiny!
I have tried everything from singing, reading, allowing her to cry, and just going in laying her down and walking out... it does not work and I can not just sit there and let her cry. The battle is over and I lost! But actually I think that we both won because she goes to sleep easier, quicker, and on schedule... and I am not stressed at nap and bedtimes.
I have one more week of teaching summer school and then the summer is mine! HAHAHA... These babies are into everything and they divide and conquer... one goes into the kitchen and the other goes down the hall. We bought one baby gate to block the kitchen off they are also pulling up on everything (and falling). I wish we could have a room filled with nothing but pillows... it is so hard to protect two babies from themselves!
??????? Question of the week ?????
How many times can a baby hit their head before there is actual damage?
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Life is good.... Everyone asks ... do the babies talk to each other? YES all the time! It is so awesome to watch them grow everyday!
PS... we left the babies in the church nursery for the first time yesterday. They did not even know we were gone!

9 months old
Well it is the end of June and it has been almost 2 months since my last post... I guess you all understand why I dont get much time to blog!
The babies are doing great. They are 9 and a half months old and they are both crawling. Olivia is very fast and can get anywhere. She has been crawling for a couple of weeks now (still the low army crawl) and Peyton finally started crawling yesterday. He is also doing the low crawl. For awhile Peyton was doing circles like he had a broken fin. He could get anywhere he needed to go but it took him a long time to get there.
Last month Peyton got his first official ear infection and he was having some minor wheezing so the doctor put him on a nebulizer and we also give him a oral steroid to help make his lungs stronger and to hopefully prevent ashma from developing. We give him treatments 2 times a day and he does fine with them. It is just a mask - We usually sing songs about ducks or tell stories about all the "pretend" animals that live in the basement. Peyton loves to listen to animated stories and animal noises. Olivia usually laughs with us during the treatments. Olivia has stayed well but she went through a phase of not sleeping through the night and that was hard. I dont know how parents do it when their little ones dont sleep all night! Tracy and I were running on empty during the 2 week phase of her getting up once or twice every night.
As far as talking goes... Both babies talk and laugh all the time! Sometimes Tracy and I think we hear a "ma ma" or "da da" but it is just a sound not intentionally calling one of us. We absolutely love to watch them play together but Olivia tends to be a little mean to Peyton and he is a cry baby whenever she touches him.
Here are some new pictures!

Olivia is hard to contain now - This is what happened one day while she was trying to pull up on the laundry basket.

Our first family outing to Mill Mountain Zoo

Olivia has discovered the Cat Door to the basement... She loves to hit the door to make it swing open and shut.
Peyton and Olivia playing together on the exersaucer... 2 minutes after this picture Olivia fell backward and hit her head on the floor...OOPS!
I hope you enjoy the pics... the babies are waking up from their nap so I will post more pictures soon! I hope to put a video of them crawling soon!

Isn't Nap Time Awesome...
I know it has been entirely too long since my last blog update... but here it is!
The babies are Napping (for once) so I am going to type fast!
Peyton and Olivia continue to eat solid foods and they have loved everything. Their favorite seems to be sweet potatoes. They are eating two containers of baby food at one sitting one time a day. They have almost had all of the stage 1 foods at this point - Sweet Potatoes, Prunes, Green Beans, Peas, Pears, Apples, Carrots, Bananas, and Squash (which we will start tonight).
Olivia has been rolling from her back to her belly but she can not get off her belly so she goes face down and just cries...
Peyton has not been able to get his big head off the ground when trying to roll from his back to his belly but he is making progress. We are trying not to compare the babies and Peyton is over a pound heavier than Olivia so it make sense that it is harder for him to roll.
Both babies are VERY happy and only cry when they are tired or hungry... They love to watch Oliver (the dog) run around and they just laugh and laugh. It is one of our favorite activities... Throwing Oliver's pink socks so he goes running and then brings the sock back to one of the babies... then we all laugh because the babies giggle and squeal!

Their first trip to Staunton! This was the first time Uncle Keifer got to hold the babies!

I love it when they fall asleep on their own...

Eating solid foods
At our last Dr visit he said that we could start feeding the babies solid food. We were to start with cereal and then move to veggies and finally to fruit. So on March 11th Peyton and Olivia started solid foods. So far they have had Cereal, Sweet Potatoes, Peas, and Bananas. They have liked everything except peas. THEY HATED PEAS but managed to make it through 4 days of them. I felt so bad that they had to eat them that I decided to give them a fruit to make up for it. Tracy and I have a rule that we will try everything that we feed the babies (except meat when it comes to that). Once we get past the trial period of testing for food allergies I am going to try to make them food, but I will probably have to wait until this summer to start that because it seems to be pretty time consuming.
These are pictures of the firt time they ate each food!

Peas:

Bananas:

Today I am off work and have been enjoying my time at home with the babies. While they were playing in the floor together I noticed something... See if you can tell what is going on:

I think Peyton and Olivia had their first fight! And the fun begins!

video of the twins and new pictures
Some of our favorite activities! Peyton loves to sit on the couch and make spit bubbles! Olivia loves to look at books! The babies also love to lay on the floor and look at each other and by look I mean try to eat each others hands!
Tatum and Brooke came to visit - Brooke told her class all about the babies and how Peyton laughed at her!
Friday March 11th was the first day that Peyton and Olivia got solid food. They both loved cereal and we could not shovel it in fast ehough!
I still can not get videos to work

6 month update
You know.... people always say "they grow up so fast", but it does not really mean anything until you actually have kids. It is hard to believe that Peyton and Olivia are 6 months old but it is true!
Last Thursday (March 10th) we went to the Doctor for their 6 month check up and we had some good news and some bad news. It was a very stressful day for Mom and Dad because they had to get 3 shots each and blood drawn from their big toe.
I will start with the good!
Peyton weighs 13 lbs 10 oz (29%)and he is 24.8 inches long(50%)
Olivia weighs 12 lbs 14 oz (37%) and she is 24 inches long (44%)
The doctor told us that we can go ahead a start feeding them solid foods starting with cereal for 5 days for 5 days and then we can try a new food for 5 days and so on. The babies loved the cereal and would actually cry between bites because we could not shovel it in fast enough! Today we tried a new food - SWEET POTATOS - The loved them too! We have one new highchair - thanks to uncle Kris and Aunt Amber! But we need to get another one! It is hard to feed the babies in a bouncy seat.
The Bad News!
This month was not a good month! We got bad news or potentially bad news on both babies.
The doctor said that he wanted to get x-rays of Peytons head because he felt like it was still long and he was worried that the skull had fused together already which we assumed that if it did fuse we would have to have surgery to fix it. We went to get the x-rays done that day and got results back the following evening. It was hard to watch Peyton cry during the x-rays but the technicians were great and very loving. We wished we could bribe him with something to make everything better but Peyton did good and finally fell asleep on the way home. Doc said that Peytons head was good and that his head may always be a little long but once his hair grows no one will notice it. We have always known that his head was long but it was caused by some of the tubing that he had to have when he was born - it is soooo much better than it was!
Olivia's bad news - When the doc was listening to her heart he said that he heard a murmur. Since he had not heard it in the past he said that he wanted to wait until their 9 month visit before doing anything. He said that since she was still low on iron in her blood her heart is having to pump faster which could cause more noises than usual so it might be nothing. He compared it to a river saying that when a river is flowing normal it is quiet but when it floods it is very loud. Hopefully it is nothing but we have to wait!
Tracy and I are not stressing about the news at this point because there is nothing we can do. We will just have to wait and see what happens at their 9 month check up which is on June 21st.
I have been trying to add pictures of their first solid foods but for some reason I can not get it to work... I will try to add them later tonight!

4 month old check up
Our 4 month check-up

Waiting for the nurse with the shots.......
Yesterday we had our 4 month old check up and SHOTS! Dr. Gard is wonderful and he was so pleased with how the babies are gaining weight. Peyton weighed in at 11 lbs and Olivia weighed 10 lbs 6 oz. She is catching up to her brother! Peyton is 23.3 inches long and Olivia is 22.5 inches long. They had to get two shots which were ok... After the first one the babies were ok but when she got them with the second one all hell broke loose. They both turned dark red and then let the screems out! It only took a minute or two to calm them down but it is hard to see that. We go back to the Doctor in two months and hopefully he will let us start some solid foods!
Tracy is awesome with the babies... He does not like to be left alone with both babies for too long because he says they "team - up" on him and cry, but he is a lifesaver for me. I don't think I could do it without him! Eventhough I am the one who has to get up to feed the babies in the middle of the night... he gets up to change the diapers and take out Oliver if he needs a potty break. We make a good team!
At our last Dr. Visit Dr Gard recommended an evaluation from early intervention, based on the fact that they were premature. They came out to do the eval and both babies qualified because they spent more than 30 days in the NICU. At this point Peyton gets Physical Therapy to help him with controling his muscles better and he will get a speech evaluation to help with his bottle feeding- he is a mess! Olivia is only on consult but because they were premature they may have some delays as they get older. The good news is that if they are delayed then they might qualify to be in my class in a couple of years! That would be crazy! But kind of cool! OK- I know that is thinking a little too far in the future!
Some milestones to date:
*Both babies love to smile and laugh - which is awesome
*They are both starting to get their hands together and they love doing tummy time on our chests or on our legs watching TV... Yes that is right... they both love the TV!
*Bath time is fun ... they are not sure if they like it or not but they do ok until I drip soap in their eyes (oops).
*They are both strong and can hold their heads up when they are on their tummy but Peyton is stronger than Olivia.
*Both babies spend every night in their own crib! They go to bed between 8 and 9 pm and I usually get up with one of them around 3 and the other waits until I am out of the shower! Some nights I have to feed both babies during the night and it takes about 2 hours to get them fed, changed, and back to sleep but it works for us.
Just swinging at Nana's House!

Christmas and other stuff
OK.... I can finally take a minute to update everyone on the babies progress! We went to the doctor yesterday for a check-up and Peyton weighed 10 lbs 11 oz and Olivia weighed 9 lbs 9 oz. To us they are so big but everyone else says "that is how much mine weighed when they were born". O-well - They are healthy and gaining at a steady increase.
It was wonderful being off work for 2 weeks (winter break) but I have to admit, I was ready to be able to take them to the babysitter and have a little time away from the babies. During the holidays the babies were spoiled rotten with everyone wanting to hold and love on them. It was wonderful at the time but once we were home the babies felt like that should continue and did not want to be put down (EVER). It was quite a task trying to get them back to going to sleep on their own but we finally did it and things are settling down. The babies also got off their sleeping routines and they were rotating who was asleep so we never got a break - there was always an awake baby. Needless to say, we learned a lot over winter break!
Two big things happened during break! The first... We transitioned both babies to sleep in their own room in their own cribs. They do great and we sleep a lot better with them in the other room. The second... Both Olivia and Peyton decided that they wanted to breastfeed. It is a challenge because I feel very tied down having to feed two babies but I have learned that as awkward as it is, feeding them at the same time is the best thing! We talked to the lactation consultant yesterday and she said that everything looks good and the babies are getting enough to eat! It is nice to be able to nurse them but it does make it hard to do anything. They will continue to get formula at the babysitters house because I can not build up a supply with both babies nursing at night. I do think that the babies look at me with a different purpose now but it is ok... I love them so much!
Whenever we go out everyone asks "are they twins"... I just want to say Duh! They always follow that up with "Oh My Gosh... I could never handle twins! How are you doing?" My answer is always "we are doing good". Although there are times when I just want to take them over to Nana's house and leave them for a couple of days, I know that we are very lucky because Peyton and Olivia are very good babies! We get good sleep at night (although if you ask Tracy he would not agree) and they are usually very happy. Peyton has the nick-name of "cry-boy" because he tends to cry in the evening and he is more needy of attention but his cry is still so soft that it is not unbearable. Most nights both babies go to bed around 9:00pm and get up at 3:30am and then we feed them before they go to the sitters at 6:30. BUT...... We get lucky some nights and they go to bed at 9:00 and sleep until 5:30.
We don't take as many pictures anymore since we get to look at them everyday but I will try to make some time this evening to post some pictures from Christmas. It will probably be another week before I am able to get to the computer while at home but I will get pictures on here soon.
They will be 4 months old on January 10th! It is hard to believe.
PS.. we met another couple at the doctors office yesterday who had a little boy who was born at 25 weeks and he weighed around 10 lbs... but he was 7 months old! It was wild to see... but he is healthy just small!
It was wonderful being off work for 2 weeks (winter break) but I have to admit, I was ready to be able to take them to the babysitter and have a little time away from the babies.
